Election Day!

Tuesday, November 4th, 2008

Mike and I got up early and walked to our polling place, getting there just as the location opened. After about 20 minutes in line, we voted using a black marker and a paper ballot. Then we walked back home, and I went out for donuts as Mike started getting ready for work. While I doubt my vote for national candidates (president, senator, congress-person) counts for much of anything given that this is Massachusetts, I did enjoy voting for our state senator and the ballot questions. Plus, it is going to be a gorgeous day out, so it was nice to get a bit of a walk in. Yay voting!

Poof, but like a balloon

I’m not sure why, but I have been kind of down the last week or so. There is exciting stuff, but I think it is stressing me out quite a bit. This stress has manifested itself in many ways: my playing jigsawdoku for 30 seconds only to pause for a minute because I don’t immediately see the answer, my inability to get a decent amount of sleep (I either get too much or too little), and my descent into Tri Delta drama. Yes, after five years of mostly avoiding the drama that was all too present during my collegiate days, I have finally swerved head-first into drama city. Sure, I’m trying to see her point of view, but it isn’t helping. It feels way more personal than the annoying calls I had to make to parents about their daughter’s finances. And I am about to burst.

Of course, the bursting sensation just tells me that I should repress the feeling until I feel more like myself (I’m a good New Englander). That way I won’t say something that I regret later. And I probably don’t want to hurt her feelings. But I feel that I am thinking the same thoughts I had about L Wang so many years ago, “I hope he has a great life, I just hope that it never crosses mine ever again.”

Well, now that I have vented a bit, the bursting sensation has subsided a bit. Thank you, kind (or non-existent) reader, you have truly helped!

Also, who thinks 2,551 word posts (as an outline) are a good idea? Seriously?

Antarctica here we come!

Eva and I met with our financial adviser on Friday so we could pay off our upcoming cruise. Neither of us were brave enough to tell him our real reason for investing.

The Moth Whisperer and other odds and ends

Thursday, November 30th, 2006

Moths are evil. For a week, they congregated at the back of my apartment building, evenly spaced, just sitting on the side of the house. They also covered the back door, and walking in and out of the back was a very frightening experience. While wondering why the moths were there, I speculated that one of my new neighbors was a Moth Whisperer, and the moths were just trying to be as close as possible. Mike thought the idea was hilarious. They have been gone for a few days, but I am still worried.

Other odds and ends

  • We updated the quote under “Team ME”. Snaps to whomever knows where it came from.
  • Bargain Tuesday only lasts until 12/12. It’s a shame that it will end so soon, since Mike and I have been to that theater more in the past two weeks than in a year and half before.
  • We ended up seeing Stranger than Fiction, even if I voted for Casino Royale. I liked it, and I think Mike did too. I knew there was a reason I loved Emma Thompson. She is great in the movie.
  • Sarah, we will totally see Happy Feet with Molly. I’ve never been to a not-made-for-IMAX IMAX movie before.
  • My car battery broke. It did not die, it broke. At least Kenny was able to fix it. Yay my car!
  • If I were running for Miss Mississippi, my platform would be to stop Rachel Profiling! (Thanks Palila, I enjoyed the flashback.)

10 Types of People

Monday, October 23rd, 2006

For his birthday last year, I got Mike a black t-shirt that says, “There are 10 types of people in the world: Those who understand binary and those who don’t.” It is the only shirt that he wears that gets comments, like the beleagured father/software engineer at the Minneapolis Airport who leaned over and confided to Mike, “Unfortunately, I do understand.”

The most recent comment was at my grandfather’s nursing home. While leaving, a woman stopped Mike with a loudly asked question, “What does your shirt mean? What is binary?” How do you explain binary numbers to a random person who asks? Mike gave me a look and then went to explain, when she said loudly, “Write it down. I can’t hear well.” Mike again gave me a look, and I quickly whispered something about adding computers to the explanation. I chatted with the woman and an older gentleman sitting next to her while Mike wrote down his explanation. When he was done, she turned the paper around, read it and smiled, saying, “Now if only I could understand them.” She thanked Mike, we said goodbye, and we headed outside.

When I asked him what he wrote down, he told me, “It’s a way of writing down numbers so a computer can understand them.” It sounds like a good enough explanation for a lay person, not overly robust, but it gets the idea across. Now, the next time Mike gets stopped about that shirt, he has an explanation.

My adventure

Thursday, October 12th, 2006

Yesterday I decided to change my daily routine a little bit. Rather than hitting up the job sites (the tentative offer I had was pulled when they saw my grades) or putting off getting in shape (although I ended up doing that anyway) I went down to Providence to drive Scotty and Fiddy up to Boston, because random people you meet on the internet are always safe. They just graduated from college in BC about 6 weeks ago and decided to travel a bit. It turns out Scotty’s brother is the person behind one red paperclip. They seem like pretty cool guys and I had a good time helping them out.

I think Eva’s favorite part was watching me drive north on their google map and laughing at my ineptitude in finding Beacon Hill when I saw her later that night.

Edit: They went to college in British Columbia, not at Boston College.

Mind-Reader

Mike went to a job fair yesterday, and we were chatting about it last night in the car. He talked to a company which makes (among other things) docking stations for iPods, which then connect it to the owner’s full sound system. I was trying to ask about the capabilities, whether you could use it remotely. The conversation went something like:

Me: Can it …

Mike: Well, it would have to, wouldn’t it, to be of any use?

Me puzzled and stunned that he answered the question just the way I thought he would, had I actually asked the question.

Me: How did you know what I was going to ask?

Mike: Well, it was the only intellegent question to ask.

I like how we communicate.

Reversal

Thursday, September 14th, 2006

I know I was all down on politics in the last post, but Mike proved to me I am not totally apathetic after all. He snaged a “Kennedy for Congress” bumper sticker, promoting re-election of Patrick Kennedy to the House of Representitives for Rhode Island. Since I live in Massachusetts, I took it as voting for Ted Kennedy, who is up for re-election this year. After all the ads for governor, it is nice to see Kennedy isn’t promoting himself any more than usual. I would be confident too, after 40+ years in office. I look forward to mindlessly voting for my Kennedy in a few months. Kennedy’s do make politics just a little bit more fun.

Even with all our bickering, I know that Mike truly loves me. He showed it today when he gave me his Reel Big Fish cd, “Turn the Radio Off”, a cd I had kept in my possession for years, even though it was really his. Yay Mike!
